Dividing a stock into aliquots the day it is made means each portion is frozen once and thawed once. Freeze–thaw cycles concentrate solutes as ice forms, expose the peptide to an ice–water interface and, in phosphate buffers, shift the pH, so a stock thawed repeatedly degrades faster than the same stock in aliquots.
Each aliquot carries the date, the lot number and the concentration.
